Solid Wood Hardwood flooring is milled from a single 3/4″, 1/2″, or 3/8″ thick pieces of hardwood. Because of its thickness, solid hardwood floors can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. One of the characteristics of solid hardwood flooring is that it expands and contracts with changes in your home’s relative humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall.
Base molding or quarter round is traditionally used to hide the extra space. Hardwood flooring comes in a wide range of styles and colors making it the perfect flooring choice to get any look you and feel you want. Hardwood flooring is made from almost any tree you can think of. Some examples are Ash, Hickory, Oak, Maple, Brazilian Koa, Cherry, Birch, Walnut, Redwood and much more. Wood floors are even made of softer wood such as pine. Hardwood floors can be stained or they can remain their natural color. You can also choose from different grades of hardwood floors for different looks. For instance a Clear Grade has the most uniform color and no blemishes. It’s the most perfect wood you can find. Select grade has an uniform color and with no large knots but may have a couple of blemishes.
Then there are builders grade and a multitude common grades. These grades tend to have more color in them and mineral streaks. The lesser grades also tend to be more knotty and rustic looking. You can even purchase whats known as reclaimed hardwood floors. This is essentially recycled hardwood floors and are great for using in historical homes; especially if you’re trying to restore the structure to it’s original appearance. Hardwood Floors also come in different plank widths from three inches to seven inches wide. The most commonly used probably the 3″, 4″, and 5″ wide planks. The floor can be laid using all of one size for a nice uniform look or it can be laid using a variety of sizes to give you beautiful contrast. No matter which option you choose you can’t go wrong with Hardwood Floors.
Engineered Wood is a good alternative to Hardwood flooring. Is actually produced with three to five layers of hardwood. Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration and bonded together under heat and pressure. As a result, engineered wood flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be installed at all levels of the home, even in basements. Before deciding on Solid or Engineered Hardwood Flooring, consider the location of the floor. The location of your hardwood flooring basically falls into three categories: On Grade – at ground level Above Grade – any second level or higher Below Grade – any floor below ground level, including basements or sunken living rooms Traditional solid hardwood flooring is not well suited for high moisture areas such as bathrooms or below-grade installations. The construction of an engineered hardwood gives it enhanced structural stability and moisture resistance that allows it to be installed at any grade level.
What type of sub floor do you have? If you plan to install over concrete, you must use an engineered product to ensure structural integrity. Solid wood flooring or Engineered flooring may be used over plywood, wood, or OSB (Oriented Strand Board) sub floors. Will there be moisture in the room? If so, you’ll want to select an engineered hardwood. The moisture resistance of an engineered hardwood floor makes it suitable for rooms where moisture is a possibility, such as bathrooms or kitchens.
